Crush Pornography

This past week I had a real eye-opener. It was a moment where I read an article that demonstrated just how much of a problem pornography has become. It’s an issue that has wrecked marriages, destroyed men’s feelings of self-worth and poisoned the soul.

So let’s talk.

Today I want to focus on why pornography is an issue. First let’s establish a few principles.

  1. Men are designed by God to be visually-oriented creatures.
While women can be sexually aroused by sight, generally-speaking, men themselves are “hardwired” to be instantly aroused by sight. We can trace this back to Genesis. Adam’s response to seeing his bride, Eve, (who was naked by the way) for the first time, is pretty expressive!
  2. A man’s sexual needs are just that—needs.
Whereas women may incorporate emotional/romantic support, men are pretty straightforward. Sex is mandatory for us.
  3. Pornography is addictive:
Once engaged in pornography, a man’s brains patterns change in a way that makes him crave more pornography for sexual satisfaction. See here for more info.

With these three facts in mind, let’s refocus on the porn problem.

First, being visual has its benefits, allowing men in a godly marriage to show sexual appreciation for their wives. The problem is, like everything that’s taken out a godly context, Satan uses this aspect of manhood to seduce men down a path that leads to misery in this life and hell in the next.

It’s tough being a guy in this age for a million reasons and our super-sexed, female-dominant, technology-happy society compounds the problem.

Second, when married, talked to your wife about your sexual needs. If your needs aren’t being met, you’ll be more susceptible to falling into the “porn pit.” Gently share Scriptures with your wife (such as 1 Corinthians 7) to encourage her to be your one source of sexual relief.

I know it’s not politically correct to think of a wife in this aspect (and I hope you married her for more than just sex ) but we can’t deny both the Scriptural validity of the fact that marriage is designed by God to avoid sexual impurity. The Bible focuses on truth not our ridiculous societal sensibilities.

When a woman turns down her husband, she’s pushing him toward sexual infidelity.

Finally, giving in to the allure of pornography will ultimately decrease your satisfaction with your spouse or, if you’re single, will reroute your understanding of godly sex.  Men: make the choice to say “no.” Back up your choice with prayer and reading the Word of God. Only by His strength can you really be the man God wants you to be.

Live strong.
