Hopefully we all have plans or ambitions for the future and we should know that transforming our dreams into reality takes a lot of work. If we are not careful, we can easily miss the joy of seeing our plans bear fruit because we lose sight of the fact that we are working towards something that we hold dear to our hearts. Focusing on how much we have to do can eliminate the sense of fulfillment in what we have already done.
I once heard a story that stayed with me. An African farmer was planting some yams and he had about 40 acres to plant. At first he started to get so discouraged because he kept seeing he had a long way to go to finish but then he stopped and straightened his shoulders. Someone nearby asked him, “Why the change in attitude?”
The wise farmer replied, “Because I am no longer seeing how much I have still to plant but rather how much I have already planted.”
Take that approach to a busy life. See not what you have still to do, but what you have already done.
